Matti Saanio (1925-2006) is known for his photos of the life and people of Lapland. He is originally from Turku, but in 1950 he moved to Oikarainen, the home village of his wife, textile artist Elsa Montell-Saanio. Then he started documenting the life in Lapland.

Matti Saanio was one of the most important photojournalists from this golden age of Finnish photojournalism. While in present day most people dont know him, in the 1960's his photos were seen in at least 110 000 Finnish homes in the magazine Suomen Kuvalehti.

The photos of this exhibition show the recent history of Lapland. Among Saanio's common themes were log rafting, rebuilding after the Lapland war, resettlers, and the general everyday life in rural Lapland.

During Villa Vinkkeli's exhibition of Matti Saanio's photos there will also be an exhibition of the textile work of Elsa Montell-Saanio on Valo and Katve galleries in Arktikum, Rovaniemi.

The photographs in this exhibition are from Finnish Cultural Foundation, Lapland Regional Fund, and from the collection of Lapland Safaris Oy. Finnfoto has supported the exhibition with a grant
